Five Easy Tips for Buying Handmade Silver Chains

Handmade silver chains are silver jewlery pieces that you should have in your jewellery box.  That is because they are very versatile and you can wear them anywhere and with any outfit.  It does not matter whether the clothes you are wearing are casual or formal, or if you are going to a party or simply shopping for groceries – your silver chains will give you an air of elegance and style.

In as much as silver chains should be part of any jewellery collection, there are two things that may make shopping for silver jewlery difficult for you.  One is that there are so many jewellery stores out there that sell silver jewellery, but just because a piece of jewellery is silver does not automatically mean that it is sterling jewellery.  Also, many jewellers sell chains that may not really fit you or suit your tastes.

You can make shopping for handmade silver chains a much easier and enjoyable task if you follow these five tips.

1. Buy only from a trustworthy source.  When you browse the Internet for silver jewlery, you will definitely come across thousands of websites selling them.  However, not all those online jewellery stores are trustworthy so it is up to you to check whether the store you will be buying from is reliable or not before you make your purchase.  Research the name of the jewellery store to see if there are complaints or negative feedback on them, and check as well if they have a sound return policy or money-back guarantee.

2. Check if the silver jewellery you will be buying is sterling silver.  As mentioned above, just because a piece of jewellery is said to be silver, it does not mean that it is sterling silver.  Pure silver is too soft to be used so it is typically combined with another metal such as copper to make it harder.  Sterling silver are pieces that are composed of 92.5% silver and 7.5% something else.  Thus, always look for the mark "925" on a piece of silver jewellery before you buy it.

3. Buy only the style that appeals to you.  Chains of silver come in many different designs and styles, such as cables, links, knots, beads or curbs.  There are even styles called Byzantine chains and chainmail.  Silver Celtic jewellery are also known as unusual jewellery because of the unique knots used in making them.  Because of the variety of styles available to you when it comes to silver jewellery, you should only buy what appeals to you and never settle for second best.

4. See if customisation is available.  When you buy handmade jewellery it is more than likely that the shop that offers them also has options for customisation to please their customers.  You can, for instance, offer a specific length of chain, a certain number and size of crystals or gemstones to go with your silver, or a specific kind of clasp on your chain.  Thus, when you shop for handmade jewellery you should also check if you can have the item customised to suit you.

5. Check for quality.  The most important thing that you need to do before you buy silver chains is to check its quality.  Do you see some scratches on its surface?  Is the silver content lower than you expected?  Is the clasp durable or easy to break?  This can be a downside when you are buying the piece online, which is why it is a must that you should only buy from online stores with a decent return policy.
